The VOL+ button pressed during power on triggers some 'safe mode' in the original rom. VOL- triggers android recovery. The (polish) post here describes entering FEL mode http://www.manta.info.pl/forum/mid705-firmware/mid705-android-4-2-2-3738/
It seems you enter FEL mode by pressing down power, then pressing down VOL+, then holding power for a few secs, then releasing power and pressing it repeatedly like 6 times.
Firmware update to Android 4.2.2 MID705 for download here (download requires Chrome or installing the same as other tablets A10/A13 through the program LiveSuit. LiveSute for download here: LiveSuite
9 Press and hold the VOL + 9 Press for about 3 seconds and the POWER button then release the POWER and 6 times quickly press POWER. It's not I cannot read that much Polish but I did not believe this :/
10 Connect the other end of the USB cable to the tablet (an alternative method of going into the update mode: hold down the VOL + (or VOL-), connect the USB cable to the tablet) This does not actually work - it brings up recovery
11 If the tablet enters the Update prompts you to install the driver (only the first time), your tablet's screen will go blank all the time. If your tablet does not enter into update mode, start normally, wait until the tablet starts, turn off the tablet and repeat the procedure with 9-10 points to fruition.
There is an interesting jumper position labaled u-boot near battery and another one near wifi. Connecting the point near wifi marked u-boot to ground makes the tablet switch to FEL mode on boot. Did not figure the battery one.
Adding a serial port (voids warranty)
You can use MicroSD Breakout board. The ones from Sparkfun or DX should work with cover but you have to remove the back cover to attach the cubietech one.
It has screws next to the connectors. Cannot be disassembled with a SD card in the SD slot. The board is on the display part and the bottom cover is removed. Remove the screws and pry the bottom cover.
Make sure the USB port is inserted into the cover first when reassembling.
Locating the UART
UART is marked on the bottom of the PCB (between the PCB and display) and on the top under the tape holding ctp connector. Both connect to the SD slot so you can as well use a SD breakout board. The FEX file does not enable UART. UART howto.
UART1 pins are used for CSI and connected to a 24pin 0.5mm pitch FFC connector which is used for camera. Probing with a multimeter confirms that the console pins seem to be connected somewhere around the middle of the connector. The pitch is the same as IDE ZIF connector but IDE is 40pin. Also the CSI cable seems much thicker. Some FFC cut&paste together with a ZIF to 3.5" IDE adaptor should give you usable pins for UART.
